Sennheiser PXC 450 Noise Cancelling Headphone

This headphone has the best overall sound quality and is aimed at the high end audiophile. The noise cancellation is better then almost all of the competition, eliminating 90% of the background noise. This headset also has very little noise leakage, so other people can’t hear what you are listening to. Finally, the construction is very solid and the comfort level is very high.

This headphone is designed for airplane travel and folds compactly flat when not in use. I also like the talk-through function, so I can respond when my wife talks to me without taking off my headphones. The Sennheisers all have extra long cables, and a volume control, both features missing on competitive headphones.

This headphone takes standard AAA batteries, which is good, but it takes 2 batteries, which is not good.

This headphone is more expensive then most though, so you have to appreciate the sound quality to justify the investment. Both the sound quality and the noise cancellation quality is a bit better then the Bose QC3 and the Sennheiser PXC 350, in my opinion.

The main negatives on this headphone are the high price and the need for 2 batteries.

Here is a condensed excerpt from one of the reviews on Amazon:

I compared these headphones side-by-side with five other noise cancelling headphones: Bose QC2 & 3, JVC NC250, Audio Technica ANC7, and Sennheiser PXC-250. I was in the market for a noise cancelling headphone because I travel a lot and I wanted to be able to watch movies or listen to music in relative isolation. With the ipod earbuds, you have to blast your ears in order to compete with the airplane’s engines and I want to preserve my hearing. My main criteria were sound qualifty, noise cancelling, and comfort. All three were very important and I didn’t really want to compromise on any of those categories. The only headphone that excelled at all three was the PXC-450. I disqualified all but the PXC-450 on the basis of out of the box testing…

Here is a condensed excerpt from one of the reviews on Amazon:

Almost perfect. I have been using noise canceling headphones since their commercial inception, mostly for air travel, and the Sennheiser PXC350 are the best sounding NC (noise canceling) headphones I personally have ever used. I have been carrying Bose NC over the ear headphones from product introduction, and prior to that Sony and others, logging many hours with different devices. Here’s the difference; the Bose have slightly more cancelation of airplane engine noise, but they cannot compare to the clarity of the Sennheiser. To put it another way, the PXC350′s have the flattest response, similar to my Etymotic canal phones, which I consider an excellent reference point. The difference was significant and noticeable to not only myself, but companion business travelers as well. One small issue…
