Bose QuietComfort 15 Acoustic Noise Cancelling Headphones

Bose QuietComfort 15 Acoustic Noise Cancelling Headphones

This headphone has great overall sound quality and is aimed at the high end audiophile. The noise cancellation is better then most of the competition, and the Bose QuietComfort 15 is actually more aggressive at noise elimination then the Bose QuietComfort 2. Overall the sound quality is very good, and, of course, many audiophiles will swear by the superiority of the Bose technology heritage.

This headphone is designed for the airplane traveller and folds compactly flat when not in use. The Bose QuietComfort 15 is an over the ear headphone and it weighs 7.4 ounces which is still pretty light.

This headphone takes a single standard AAA battery, so you can just replace it when it runs out of power. The battery lasts for 35 hours so you don’t really need to take another battery along even on long plane flights.

This headphone contains cables that fit almost all Apple devices including the iPod (shuffle, nano, touch, etc), iPhone (3GS and 4), iPad (1 and 2), Macbook, and Macbook Pro. With all, you can choose to listen to music and with the iPhone, you can choose to take phone calls, as it does have a built in micro-phone.

This headphone is more expensive then many other noise cancelling headphones, although less then the Bose Quiet Comfort 3, so you have to appreciate the sound quality and the Bose technology heritage to feel good about the investment.

The main negative on this headphone are the somewhat higher high price, but, in general, this is a nice headphone.

Here is a condensed excerpt from one of the user comments on the Bose QuietComfort 15 Acoustic Noise Cancelling Headphone:

I decided to cheap out earlier and bought a pair of Sony NR headsets for $30 and change. They seemed pretty good but on flights, the NR wasn’t good enough – way too much background noise. Finally I decided to man up and get the real deal. And boy, what a change (for the better)!

With the Bose headsets, NR means NR, they ain’t kidding about when they say NR, absolutely no background noise on the flight. My quick thoughts on this so far:

- You haven’t heard true HD sound if you haven’t heard it on this headset. And the sound is not like bass or treble heavy, it’s just crisp and you can hear every water drop and every single instrument being played. And NR works great both ways on this headset – the surrounding noise is almost cancelled out completely for you when you’re using the headsets, and the sound of the sound from the headset doesn’t carry out of the headsets either. I can listen to music or movies at a fairly high volume and the person sitting next to me won’t hear a thing.

- The leather trim around the headsets makes them extremely comfortable to wear. I wear them on 15-hour flights and don’t feel any strain by the end of the flight. My ears or head don’t hurt because of the headsets and the plastic strap. They truly are made for comfort.

- It comes with airplane adapter so you can turn it from a single 3.5mm audio cable into one that fits in the airplane sockets. The cable is also detachable completely from the headset, which I actually find very useful when I want to doze off and not be bothered by surrounding noise. You don’t realize how effective the headsets are till you take them off and realize how much of background noise they were eliminating!

- The only one downside of this headset is that it runs on a AAA battery. So I always need to make sure I have fully charged batteries with me at all times. I carry rechargeable batteries (Sanyo Eneloop are the BEST) with a charger. So if I do run out of battery, I can always charge it on the flight itself. ON a full charge of the Eneloop AAA, I am yet to run out of battery on a 15-hour flight.

Yes, these headsets aren’t cheap but they are worth every penny. Bose puts so much research and effort into developing their products, I have absolutely no reason to complain!

This headphone takes a proprietary lithium ion battery, so you can’t just replace the battery when it runs out of power. For long journeys, it may make sense to buy 2 batteries as it isn’t always easy to recharge the single battery.

This headphone is more expensive then most, so you have to appreciate the sound quality and the Bose technology heritage to feel good about the investment.

The main negatives on this headphone are the high price and the non-standard battery.

Here is a condensed excerpt from one of the reviews on Amazon:

I received the Bose QuietComfort 3 for Christmas in 2007 from my husband (he never knows what to give me so I hinted it heavily this time).

I instantly loved them and I mainly use them for my workouts. I hate being in the gym and have to listen to fans, AC, TVs, etc when I want to listen to my music. I do have to note though that while they cancel out a lot of the noises going on around you, they don’t cancel out all. Sometimes I was able to hear the instructor of the spinning class shouting (but this was also due to the way that gym is constructed)… but she was canceled out enough for me to think someones pomeranian dog was barking nearby. I still hear the people that play racquetball one story below me at the gym when they shout out in anger (there are windows open towards the down stairs racquetball rooms so that one can watch the players from the upstairs cardio room). Or sometimes when the TV is turned up in one of the small cardio rooms (that used to be a racquetball court) and you are unfortunate enough to be right next to the wall from which the sound bounces off, the headphones will not cancel out that noise enough and you are able to hear a lot. So sometimes the way the room or structure in which you are will transmit acoustics matters how effective noise will be canceled out.

But compared to your average run of the mill headphones they win big time. On an airplane they make it possible to listen to what is said in an in-flight movie compared to all the times with regular headphones and the constant wall of airplane noises making it impossible to really know what was just said.

When wearing them while walking, riding the bus/train/streetcar: No more cellphone conversations from strangers will get to your ear. Just your music.

Now to the quirkiness:
I noticed that from time to time there was a slight clanking sound inside one of the headphone earpieces when I walked or ran. It came and went. Don’t know what caused it to start or to stop. It is not a very loud noise (actually very slight) , just one that gets you worried that your headphones might be broken or about to break down.

A few weeks ago the left speaker of my headphones started to pop from time to time though. It sounded like a slight tap on a microphone. And unfortunately that popping turned into a plop and then a low and permanent “whoosh”. The left speaker still emits music but the “whoosh” that is overlapping it, makes it impossible to enjoy the clear sound that once was mine. So I went ahead and ordered new ones. My old pair served me well for 2 1/2 years on a daily base throughout sweat drenched workouts for hours, flying back and forth with me to Europe and Asia, making it possible to listen to music on my MBP while surfing the internet while others were watching TV in the same room (this time without the TV sound spoiling the sound of music with me not having to turn up my volume on the MBP but rather turn it down). I really can’t wait for the new pair of headphones to arrive. I had to use some normal ones yesterday and had to turn up the music so loud to hear it and what I heard wasn’t what I was used to. I was able to hold a conversation without removing the headphones from my ear and the music still playing. It was awful… I became so spoiled by my Bose Headphones.  Working out just wouldn’t be as pleasant without them.
