Audio Technica ATH ANC7B

Audio Technica ATH ANC7B

This headphone has great overall sound quality. The noise cancellation is better then almost all of the competition, eliminating 90% of the background noise, which matches the Sennheiser and Bose noise cancelling headphones. This headset has great sound across a full range of frequencies.

This headset works when the noise cancellation is off, so even if the batteries are out, you can at least hear great sound quality when listening to your MP3s, CDs, etc. This headphone takes 1 standard AAA batteries, which is good.

The Audio Technica ATH-ANC7B is designed for airplane travel and folds compactly flat when not in use. It also has an airplane adaptor so you can hear the movie or music programs with full noise cancellation to block out the external airplane noise.

While the sound quality is not quite as good as the Sennheiser or Bose headsets, the price is significantly lower, and represents the best balance of quality and value.

Here is the top ranked review on Amazon:

I’ve been toying with the idea of getting a set of active noise canceling headphones for a while. Both my wife and I are having to fly more for our jobs, so I can certainly justify this expense. While I hadn’t directly tested anything else, I’ve read reviews both at Amazon and other places for a number of different headphones. The predecessor to these, Audio-Technica ATH-ANC7 QuietPoint Active Noise-Cancelling Headphones generally scored well in the reviews, and seemed favored even over the venerable BOSE Quiet Comfort models, the several low rated reviews about sound leakage gave me pause.

Seeing these supposedly new and improved versions recently come to market, I decided to take a chance with the hope that this one negative would be fixed for what is otherwise an excellent product.

I’ve not been exposed to the original to know first hand how bad the “sound leakage” issue is, but it is something I wanted to test for. I can say that, when I have my Ipod cranked up full (almost at a painful level) and the ANC turned on, it is pretty easy for someone outside to hear what is playing, particularly when there’s not a lot of noise in the area. However, in a more “real world” test, I had my wife listening with them while we took a trip with the kids in our minivan. While not up to aircraft levels, the van can generate a decent amount of noise, especially at speed and on noisy asphalt. In this case, I had her turn it up as loud as she could comfortably do. I managed to barely be able to hear something from the headphones, but not even to the point that I could tell what she was listening to. That test was enough to allay my concerns about the “sound leakage” issue as a practical matter.

My wife greatly appreciated using the headphones on our road trip and found them very effective and damping down the road and engine noise. For the most part, our trips don’t happen at the same time, but I can already tell that, if we are traveling together, I’ll be adding a second set to our house hold. While not as good sounding as some of my dedicated over the ear heaphones for music, especially with the ANC on, the sound quality is still well more than acceptable and a fair compromise to go along with the ANC capability. As is typical of the technology, most of the sound reduction comes at the lower frequencies, with higher vocal level frequencies getting much less attentuation. These will knock down the low level engine rumblings, but not silence a conversation.

As for the package in general, it’s very simple and elegant. The battery compartment takes a single AAA battery and it is easy to rotate the cover on the right earpiece to expose and replace the battery. While it doesn’t lock, it is firm enough that I don’t think there’s going to be an issue with accidentally opening the battery compartment. The headphones use a standard 3.5mm stereo connection and the package comes with both a short (good for having a player in your hand or on a belt clip) and longer cable that would be suitable plugging into a set of desktop speakers and allowing you to move about your desk. There are also 1/4″ adapter plugs for use with a typical home stereo/AVR as well as the typical two pronged airline connector. The case has a zippered internal pocket to hold all of these, along with extra AAA batteries (one Energizer even comes with the package). The case is pretty compact, which is good for using with a carry on bag. Even so, there is sufficient room to easily hold my Ipod 5G 60GB inside. There’s space still for something a little wider and a good bit longer, so I suspect an Ipod Touch or Zune would fit with no trouble. The case itself is pretty sturdy with heavy inserts in the back, front, and sides to hold the case’s shape.

When I made my purchase, the price difference between the new model and the old one was effectively the same. Even as of this writing, there’s only a net $10 difference. With that in mind, if you have looked at the previous generation, I see no reason to get it anymore. This unit incorporates at least two year’s worth of improvements over the original and comes in at a very competitive pricepoint, especially compared to BOSE and some of the other high end ANC headphones.

Review the Klipsch Image S4i In-Ear Headset

Overall Rating: 4.0/5.0

Klipsch Image S4i In-Ear Headset

Klipsch Image S4i In-Ear Headset

The Klipsch Image S4i In-Ear Headset is a high end earbud headphone. It is one of the more popular sound isolating headphones on the market today. On Amazon, the Klipsch Image S4i In-Ear Headset has 77 reviews with an average star rating of 4.0 out of 5.

This is a earbud not an over the ear or around the ear headset. Some people love that, because wearing a heavy headphone for a long 8 hour airplane flight can be uncomfortable and carrying a headphone around is less convenient then carrying something light. Ultimate Ears are not uncomfortable, and are extermely light at 0.6 ounces. Many users swear that earbuds are much better if you commute on a daily basis.

As a sound isolating earbud, this headset does not have active noise cancellation. Instead it uses sound isolation to block outside noise.

The sound quality is pretty good, better then for many earbuds, but it does not have separate speakers for bass and high frequencies like the Ultimate Ears TripleFi 10. This means the sound quality is a bit better on bass then at high frequencies.

The navigation controls and flexibility of the Klipsch Image S4i is pretty impressive, if you own any Apple iPhone, as you can very easily toggle between listening to music and taking calls. There is also good navigation to pause/play and skip music.

This headphone, of course, by virtue of not having active noise cancellation technology, does not require a battery which is another plus.

Here is one of the reviews on Amazon:

I purchased 3 different in-ear earphones for use with my gixxer 600 sportsbike. I have repeatedly tested them using the same songs on my iPhone 3GS, same helmet and gloves for about 1 week. Here is how I would rate them (considering price):

Klipsch S4i >>> noise isolation C, bass response A, remote A, ear canal comfort B. Cost $99
Etymotic M3 >>> noise isolation A, bass response C, remote B, ear canal comfort C. Cost $99
Eytmotic HF2 >>> noise isolation A, bass response B, remote C, ear canal comfort A. Cost 159

The Etys were best at noise isolation (really blocks out engine and road noises). But there ENDS the similarities between M3 and HF2.

The problem with M3 is its tiny 3-button remote is barely usable unless you have really tiny fingers (it gets worse when I am wearing gloves while riding, it is impossible to “feel” the buttons). The built-in microphone is also of poor quality (my buddies say I sounded thin over the phone). The actual speaker tubes are quite thick (inserting them into my ear canal caused a lot of stress and became uncomfortable after extended period of time). It is also the least sensitive (requiring about 25% more volume dial). Its sound quality very good but not as good as the HF2 or S4i.

The HF2 is hands down the winner in all categories, but it is the most expensive one and lacks 3-button control. Although it uses the same 3-flange eartip as the M3, I found the HF2 very comfortable because its “balanced armature” speaker tubes are really tiny (about the size of a pencil lead, very easy to insert into ear canal). It also offers the highest sensitivity (requires about 25% less volume dial on my iPhone 3GS) and the highest accuracy (as in highs are clear, lows are punchy and none of the frequencies are over-blown). The noise isolation also superb (blocks out 90% of the engine and road noises).

The S4i offers the best bass response. I would say it is about 50% stronger than the Etys. This much bass may or may not suit you, depending on personal taste. I find it great for hip-pop type of music but poor for instrumentals (the pianos sounded a bit distorted). Its microphone is better than HF2. Its 3-button remote is bigger and easier to use than HF2. Its sensitivity and accuracy are very close to the HF2. The only problem I want to point out is that S4i uses oval-shaped eartips that do not seal as well as the Etys. They did not fit my ear canal well and blocked out only half the noise. Comfort wise, it is better than M3 but worse than HF2.

Of all these 3, I would say either go with the Etymotic HF2 for its supreme noise isolation, in-ear comfort and clarity – OR – go with the Klipsch S4i for its stronger bass and better remote. Skip the Etymotic M3 because it is uncomfortable (thick tubes), has tiny remotes (hard to “feel” buttons) and offers the lowest sensitivity (requires highest volume dial).

As a sound isolating earbud, this headset does not have active noise cancellation. Here is one of the reviews on Amazon:

These Buds come with the full arsenal for a great listening experience. They come with four types of buds, one type a foam kind that fits to your ear perfectly, so they are what I use. And when you put them in, you can’t hear anything outside or around you. Airplanes with crying babies are no match; the buds cancel ambient noise by design.

The main selling point for me was the iPhone compatibility, with the mic and play button. Works great, and the only complain from a realllly picky perspective would be that the button be right below the mic, instead of on the main chord, as the mic and button are separate on the chord. But it makes no difference.

Another thing I like is the wire that comes out of the bud end. There is a wire about 2 inches long inside the cord that you can bend so when you put them over your ear they stay in place, which is great when I run and move around. They are large, due to the three drivers in each bud, but are worth it. From low to high frequency, they play music back as accurately as possible.

I record my music in lossless formats on my computer, so playback comes at CD quality. After a couple weeks of listening, this is what I found: Bass is strong. Now I wouldn’t use these phones for a DJ or anyone whose only concern is bass, but every low chord or beat comes out as if you were right there playing it yourself. But this is what got me. The best sound quality for these speakers comes in the mid-high to high frequencies. It doesn’t matter how high the sound is, be it a trumpet blaring, guitar at high E with cymbal crashes, or a female soprano hitting the highs, the speakers won’t crack or fuzz like cheap headphones, and when comparing them to the generic iPhone ones I regretfully was using before, the difference is extremely pleasant and refreshing. This is quite something, since the first thing I listen to is Bass quality, so for the crisp highs to take away my attention from Bass is saying something.

One last thing for the listening experience that is a great joy to listen to is their reproduction of the sound itself. Some speakers make you feel like you’re in the studio, others make you feel like you’re listening by the studio, and each headphone is different. This is called sound stage, and the UE’s reproduce it very well. Unamped, they can put you there

The case is great (practical) and I use it all the time, as well as the extender when I need to. For Audiophiles such as me, pictures and specs are on their website at [...]. They show you how to wrap the cord around your ear like i explained earlier, which is nice.

I have many headphones, including AKG 701′s, Sennheiser HD 650′s, Sony MDR-F1′s, Shure and those V-moda’s, among mannnnyyy others. For an earbud, these rank among the top of the list, and I would reccommend them to anyone.

Review of Beats by Dre – Monster Beats Solo High-Def On-Ear Headphones with ControlTalk

Monster Beats by Dre Solo High Definition On Ear Headphones

Monster Beats by Dre Solo High Definition On Ear Headphones

This headset is one of the most popular headphones on the market today. On Amazon, the Monster Beats by Dre Solo High Definition On Ear Headphones has 137 reviews with an average star rating of 4 out of 5.

I like the sound quality in this headphone. Unlike some other Dr Dre headphones, Monster Beats does not overpower you with bass. The vocals are crystal clear and I don’t hear any distortion at high frequencies. The noise isolation design is very good, but it does not eliminate as much noise as the Beats Studio by Dr. Dre which has active noise cancellation. Overall, the sound quality is also not as good as the Beats Studio by Dr. Dre.

Just like the Studio, this headphone is far more stylish then the Bose or Sennheiser models so you will look cool wearing them. The Solo is designed for outside use, so it is far more portable, while the Studio is designed for indoor use and has higher sound quality and noise reduction.

Another feature I really like in this headphone is the ability to take hands free calls from my iPhone in the middle of listening to music.

Finally, this headphone is more portable then the Bose or Sennheiser models.

The headphones fold up and are easy to travel with, and I think they did a great job on the cabling. There is no battery requirement as it does not have active noise cancellation.

Here is a condensed excerpt from one of the reviews on Amazon:

I have to admit I was a bit skeptical purchasing these headphones as the previous generation Dr. Dre Beats solos got some poor reviews in terms of an overpowering bass and poor build quality. Considering this price point I assume a lot of consumers are looking for the same things I was in a pair of headphones: high fidelity sound, great build quality, and style. Upfront these new HD Solo headphones represent in all there categories.

High Fidelity:
I tested these headphones out in several genres since I listen to an eclectic mix. First thoughts was I found the sound a little too tight and not broad enough. There needs to be an initial burning in period to get the full sound quality, lets say 8 hours or so of heavy listening and these bad boys find their sweet spot.

The first cd in the mix was Kings of Leon Only by the Night I put on ‘Sex on Fire.’ You get some nice high notes and kick drum beats in this song as well as some killer electric guitar. What impressed me was how sweet the vocals were in terms of clarity and vibrato while still letting the instrumentals shine through. I like my music loud and clear, and these delivered…the kick drum literally vibrates your head with every beat while keeping the mids and highs spot on!

The next cd up was some Lil’ Wayne I Am Not A Human Being. I put on the first track ‘Gonorrhea.’ Damn boys and girls this is where the Solo Beats HD shine, pow pow, like bass so far gone you wonder is there an earthquake in my head. Followed up by a great rendering of the electrical beats and smooth bellowing vocal licks and you know these headphones just busted out a five star review hands down.

I wanted to slow this tempo down with some acoustical guitar from my man Ray LaMontagne. So I will round out this fidelity review with his live performance of ‘Empty’ off his latest cd Gossip In The Grain. I figured if these headphones would fall short, no doubt it would be on a song like this. The breathy vocals and pedal steel guitar on this track gave the Solos HD some difficulty. I seriously doubt this would be noticeable to most listeners. I found the instrumentals to be a bit spacey on the low registers with the speakers focusing more shine on the highs. If I were to judge the solos entirely on this performance I would still give them 4 stars.

I also watched an episode of “Glee”, yeah I said “Glee” Boss! It sounded excellent. Crisp dialogue and nice full body rendering of the song performances. Mercedes preformed a rendition of ‘Rag Doll’ from Tina Turners old release and it sounded phenomenal. Overall I found the sound quality to be excellent and all encompassing across the numerous genres of music and vocals.

The build quality and style of these headphones was equally impressive.

I know there were some previous issues with the head band snapping in the Solos, but they seem to have fixed that with a metal band that is hidden below the padded head rest. The band seem to has a lot of give and flexibility while still feeling firm. I was most impressed with the tightly fitted hinges where the ear pieces fold out and the thick metal used to extend the ear cups. When extended the ear cups do not fold but firmly remain in their locked position. The padding around the ear is the softest synthetic vinyl I have ever felt and could pass for calf skin leather. The headphones feel soft and supple around the ear. On the head they feel firm, almost too firm at first but do loosen up like a good pair of shoes over time while stile keeping their rigidity . I think this is a true sign of build quality. After breaking them in they feel extremely comfortable on the ears and I have a fairly large head.

The ‘Control Talk’ cord is in one word, perfection! It is long but not too long, red in color and has a thick rubber skin. The 3.5mm L-shape adapter on the end is idea for plugging into a music player or laptop as it bends inward and safely stays out of the way. I cant count the number of headphones I have had that fray or break off because of jutting out and being pulled, bent, or rubbed to death. I like how I can lay back in bed and type on my laptop with out my headphone jack pushing against my forearm on the side, a huge plus. The other end plugs into the head phones making this a detachable cord which is very nice as it can be replaced independently of the headphones. The ‘Control’ talk feature is awesome. You have a volume up and down function as well as a small steel(not plastic but steel) button in the center that you click once to pause or answer a call, twice to skip forward, three times to skip backward. This will only work on certain devices though. If you have a mac it will also control your volume and playback features in itunes which rocks! It worked great on my macbook pro and my ipod touch 3rd generation. Though to get the song to skip I had to click twice with some quickness, but it did work.

The finish is done in the same shiny black on these as the Studio by Dr. Dre beats. Simply put these look cool as all get out. The brushed aluminum trim work on the ear cups is a nice touch as well as the beats log on each side. I did not find fingerprints to be that much of an issue on the gloss finish at all. They do include a red microfiber cleaning cloth. In summation, yeah sure for cheaper you could get equal or even better quality sounding headphones. Check out Shure 440′s or even some Koss PortaPros if your tight on cash and want good sound quality with less focus on style. However as far as Bass, Style, and Audio Quality goes, check these bad boys out! I highly recommend them! I got mine on the cheap for 169 at Buydig dot com with a 10 dollar coupon (BDRewards10) check it. Or Google them. All the music mentioned above can be purchased right here on Amazon.com.

Bose QuietComfort 15 Acoustic Noise Cancelling Headphones

Bose QuietComfort 15 Acoustic Noise Cancelling Headphones

This headphone has great overall sound quality and is aimed at the high end audiophile. The noise cancellation is better then most of the competition, and the Bose QuietComfort 15 is actually more aggressive at noise elimination then the Bose QuietComfort 2. Overall the sound quality is very good, and, of course, many audiophiles will swear by the superiority of the Bose technology heritage.

This headphone is designed for the airplane traveller and folds compactly flat when not in use. The Bose QuietComfort 15 is an over the ear headphone and it weighs 7.4 ounces which is still pretty light.

More Info on The Bose QuietComfort 15.

This headphone takes a single standard AAA battery, so you can just replace it when it runs out of power. The battery lasts for 35 hours so you don’t really need to take another battery along even on long plane flights.

This headphone contains cables that fit almost all Apple devices including the iPod (shuffle, nano, touch, etc), iPhone (3GS and 4), iPad (1 and 2), Macbook, and Macbook Pro. With all, you can choose to listen to music and with the iPhone, you can choose to take phone calls, as it does have a built in micro-phone.

This headphone is more expensive then many other noise cancelling headphones, although less then the Bose Quiet Comfort 3, so you have to appreciate the sound quality and the Bose technology heritage to feel good about the investment.

More Info on The Bose QuietComfort 15.

The main negative on this headphone are the somewhat higher high price, but, in general, this is a nice headphone.

Here is a condensed excerpt from one of the user comments on the Bose QuietComfort 15 Acoustic Noise Cancelling Headphone:

I decided to cheap out earlier and bought a pair of Sony NR headsets for $30 and change. They seemed pretty good but on flights, the NR wasn’t good enough – way too much background noise. Finally I decided to man up and get the real deal. And boy, what a change (for the better)!

With the Bose headsets, NR means NR, they ain’t kidding about when they say NR, absolutely no background noise on the flight. My quick thoughts on this so far:

- You haven’t heard true HD sound if you haven’t heard it on this headset. And the sound is not like bass or treble heavy, it’s just crisp and you can hear every water drop and every single instrument being played. And NR works great both ways on this headset – the surrounding noise is almost cancelled out completely for you when you’re using the headsets, and the sound of the sound from the headset doesn’t carry out of the headsets either. I can listen to music or movies at a fairly high volume and the person sitting next to me won’t hear a thing.

- The leather trim around the headsets makes them extremely comfortable to wear. I wear them on 15-hour flights and don’t feel any strain by the end of the flight. My ears or head don’t hurt because of the headsets and the plastic strap. They truly are made for comfort.

- It comes with airplane adapter so you can turn it from a single 3.5mm audio cable into one that fits in the airplane sockets. The cable is also detachable completely from the headset, which I actually find very useful when I want to doze off and not be bothered by surrounding noise. You don’t realize how effective the headsets are till you take them off and realize how much of background noise they were eliminating!

- The only one downside of this headset is that it runs on a AAA battery. So I always need to make sure I have fully charged batteries with me at all times. I carry rechargeable batteries (Sanyo Eneloop are the BEST) with a charger. So if I do run out of battery, I can always charge it on the flight itself. ON a full charge of the Eneloop AAA, I am yet to run out of battery on a 15-hour flight.

Yes, these headsets aren’t cheap but they are worth every penny. Bose puts so much research and effort into developing their products, I have absolutely no reason to complain!

Review the Shure SE210 Sound Isolating Earbud Headphone

Shure SE210

Great Sound After Fitting

This is a high end earbud headphone. It is one of the most popular sound isolating headphones on the market today. On Amazon, the Shure SE210 has 104 reviews with an average star rating of 3.5 out of 5.

This is a earbud not an over the ear or around the ear headset. Some people love that, because wearing a heavy headphone for a long 8 hour airplane flight can be uncomfortable. The Shure SE210 is not uncomfortable, and is pretty light at 5 ounces.

As a sound isolating earbud, this headset does not have active noise cancellation. Instead it uses sound isolation to block outside noise. You do have to go through a “fitting” process to mold the earbud to your ear. The Shure SE210 provides an extensive fitting kit to ensure that the earbuds will fit your ears. Once you go through the fitting process, the noise isolation is very good.

The sound quality is pretty good, better then for many earbuds. However, the bass is not as deep as the some of the best noise cancelling headphones.

Order it from Amazon right here at the lowest price anywhere.

This headphone, of course, by virtue of not having active noise cancellation technology, does not require a battery.

Order it from Amazon right here at the lowest price anywhere.

The main negatives on this headphone are that the sound quality is not as good as on the higher quality over the ear audiophile headphones.

Here is one of the reviews on Amazon:

I’m a former audio engineer (cool job but hard to make any ‘real’ money) so as you might suspect I’m pretty discriminating when it comes to gear. Shure has long been a big name in pro audio, their SM57 and SM58 microphones are industry standards so it was only natural that I selected Shure when I decided to go for a pair of high end buds. Understand that these are NOT just a “pop them in and go” pair of phones like the kind that came with your MP3 player. You have to learn how to wear them and most people will probably experience some discomfort until you get used to them. This type of sound isolating earphone has to go DEEP into your ear canal to work properly. If you don’t get the fit just right, you won’t experience the rich sound including good (but not “in your face”) bass that this pair of cans is capable of delivering. Getting the fit right and achieving a nice tight seal is absolutely critical. If you don’t get it right these will sound like an old AM radio. Fortunately, Shure includes an very complete fit kit which includes several different types of sleeves in different sizes. After much experimentation I found the medium black foam sleeves (which were installed by default) worked the best. The characteristics of this foam are very unique. It compresses easily but is slow to return to shape. This is EXACTLY what is needed to get a good seal. To “install” the buds in your ears you first squeeze the foam between your fingers to compress it then you quickly insert the earphone in your ear and hold it there for about 10-15 seconds until the foam expands and forms a good seal. You’ll find it’s easier to put them in one at a time. You know if you did it right when you can no longer hear much (if any) ambient room noise. Try holding a conversation with someone who’s about 10 feet away. If you CAN’T, then you’ve got a good seal. This takes some practice. You may have to try putting them in several times to achieve a good seal. Once you do, you’ll immediately notice the rich warm sound these phones are capable of producing. So the bottom line here is that it takes some extra effort and time to get the most of this product but once you get over the learning curve I believe you’ll agree that Shure has created another precision piece of audio gear worthy of your consideration.

Sennheiser PXC 450 Noise Cancelling Headphone

This headphone has the best overall sound quality and is aimed at the high end audiophile. The noise cancellation is better then almost all of the competition, eliminating 90% of the background noise. This headset also has very little noise leakage, so other people can’t hear what you are listening to. Finally, the construction is very solid and the comfort level is very high.

This headphone is designed for airplane travel and folds compactly flat when not in use. I also like the talk-through function, so I can respond when my wife talks to me without taking off my headphones. The Sennheisers all have extra long cables, and a volume control, both features missing on competitive headphones.

More Info on the Sennheiser PXC 450.

This headphone takes standard AAA batteries, which is good, but it takes 2 batteries, which is not good.

This headphone is more expensive then most though, so you have to appreciate the sound quality to justify the investment. Both the sound quality and the noise cancellation quality is a bit better then the Bose QC3 and the Sennheiser PXC 350, in my opinion.

More Info on the Sennheiser PXC 450.

The main negatives on this headphone are the high price and the need for 2 batteries.

Here is a condensed excerpt from one of the reviews on Amazon:

I compared these headphones side-by-side with five other noise cancelling headphones: Bose QC2 & 3, JVC NC250, Audio Technica ANC7, and Sennheiser PXC-250. I was in the market for a noise cancelling headphone because I travel a lot and I wanted to be able to watch movies or listen to music in relative isolation. With the ipod earbuds, you have to blast your ears in order to compete with the airplane’s engines and I want to preserve my hearing. My main criteria were sound qualifty, noise cancelling, and comfort. All three were very important and I didn’t really want to compromise on any of those categories. The only headphone that excelled at all three was the PXC-450. I disqualified all but the PXC-450 on the basis of out of the box testing…

Review the Bose QuietComfort 3 Noise Cancelling Headphone

This headset is one of the most popular headphones on the market today.   On Amazon, the Bose QuietComfort 3 Noise Cancelling Headphone has 181 reviews with an average star rating of 4 out of 5.

Overall Rating: 4.0/5.0

Price: $340 – $399

Bose QuietComfort 3

Bose QuietComfort 3

This headphone has great overall sound quality and is aimed at the high end audiophile. The noise cancellation is better then most of the competition, and the Bose QuietComfort 3 is actually more aggressive at noise elimination then the Bose QuietComfort 2. Overall the sound quality is very good, and, of course, many audiophiles will swear by the superiority of the Bose technology heritage.

This headphone is designed for the airplane traveller and folds compactly flat when not in use. The Bose QuietComfort 3 is an over the ear headphone and it weighs 5.7 ounces which is pretty light.

This headphone takes a proprietary lithium ion battery, so you can’t just replace the battery when it runs out of power. For long journeys, it may make sense to buy 2 batteries as it isn’t always easy to recharge the single battery.

This headphone is more expensive then most, so you have to appreciate the sound quality and the Bose technology heritage to feel good about the investment.

The main negatives on this headphone are the high price and the non-standard battery.

Here is a condensed excerpt from one of the reviews on Amazon:

I received the Bose QuietComfort 3 for Christmas in 2007 from my husband (he never knows what to give me so I hinted it heavily this time).

I instantly loved them and I mainly use them for my workouts. I hate being in the gym and have to listen to fans, AC, TVs, etc when I want to listen to my music. I do have to note though that while they cancel out a lot of the noises going on around you, they don’t cancel out all. Sometimes I was able to hear the instructor of the spinning class shouting (but this was also due to the way that gym is constructed)… but she was canceled out enough for me to think someones pomeranian dog was barking nearby. I still hear the people that play racquetball one story below me at the gym when they shout out in anger (there are windows open towards the down stairs racquetball rooms so that one can watch the players from the upstairs cardio room). Or sometimes when the TV is turned up in one of the small cardio rooms (that used to be a racquetball court) and you are unfortunate enough to be right next to the wall from which the sound bounces off, the headphones will not cancel out that noise enough and you are able to hear a lot. So sometimes the way the room or structure in which you are will transmit acoustics matters how effective noise will be canceled out.

But compared to your average run of the mill headphones they win big time. On an airplane they make it possible to listen to what is said in an in-flight movie compared to all the times with regular headphones and the constant wall of airplane noises making it impossible to really know what was just said.

When wearing them while walking, riding the bus/train/streetcar: No more cellphone conversations from strangers will get to your ear. Just your music.

Now to the quirkiness:
I noticed that from time to time there was a slight clanking sound inside one of the headphone earpieces when I walked or ran. It came and went. Don’t know what caused it to start or to stop. It is not a very loud noise (actually very slight) , just one that gets you worried that your headphones might be broken or about to break down.

A few weeks ago the left speaker of my headphones started to pop from time to time though. It sounded like a slight tap on a microphone. And unfortunately that popping turned into a plop and then a low and permanent “whoosh”. The left speaker still emits music but the “whoosh” that is overlapping it, makes it impossible to enjoy the clear sound that once was mine. So I went ahead and ordered new ones. My old pair served me well for 2 1/2 years on a daily base throughout sweat drenched workouts for hours, flying back and forth with me to Europe and Asia, making it possible to listen to music on my MBP while surfing the internet while others were watching TV in the same room (this time without the TV sound spoiling the sound of music with me not having to turn up my volume on the MBP but rather turn it down). I really can’t wait for the new pair of headphones to arrive. I had to use some normal ones yesterday and had to turn up the music so loud to hear it and what I heard wasn’t what I was used to. I was able to hold a conversation without removing the headphones from my ear and the music still playing. It was awful… I became so spoiled by my Bose Headphones.  Working out just wouldn’t be as pleasant without them.

Review the Panasonic RP-HC55 Earbud Noise Cancelling Headphone

Overall Rating: 3.5/5.0
Price: $50 – $79

Panasonic RP-HC55 Earbud Noise Cancelling Headphone

Panasonic RP-HC55 Noise Cancelling Earbud Headphone

This is a earbud headphone. It is one of the most popular noise cancelling headphones on the market today.   On Amazon, the Panasonic RP-HC55 Noise Cancelling Earbud Headphone has 181 reviews with an average star rating of 3.5 out of 5.

So, this is a earbud headphone not an over the ear or around the ear headset. Some people love that, because wearing a heavy headphone for a long 8 hour airplane flight can be uncomfortable. These Panasonic RP HC55 earbuds are not uncomfortable, and they are pretty light at 5 ounces.

Some people hate earbuds, because the sound quality is not as good as a true audiophile over the ear headphone. Usually, there just isn’t enough room in the earbud. In this case, I believe the bass is not as deep as on many other headsets in the market.

However, from a noise cancellation perspective, the Panasonic RP-H55C is actually pretty good, eliminating 88% of the background noise, which is pretty good. Many earbud headphones do not have any noise cancellation technology, relying just on the fact that the earbud is a tight fit and shuts out outside noise. The Panasonic RP-H55C is one of the few earbud headphones with active noise cancellation technology, and they do a pretty good job.

If you want to buy this headphone, order it from Amazon right here at the lowest price anywhere.

This headphone, of course, by virtue of being an earbud, takes very little space for traveling. It takes 1 standard AAA battery, which makes it easy to replace the battery.

For a noise cancelling headphone, the Panasonic RP-HC55 is one of the least expensive headsets on the market. So, I think it is a great value.

Consumer Reports appears to agree with my assessment. The 2009 Electronics issue rates this Panasonic the Best Buy among NC headphones.

If you want to buy this headphone, order it from Amazon right here at the lowest price anywhere.

The main negatives on this headphone are that the sound quality is not as good as on the higher quality over the ear audiophile headphones.

Here is a condensed excerpt from one of the reviews on Amazon:

These are the best bang for the buck! I bought them after reading Consumer Report’s review rating them higher than the Bose and Sennheisers. I own a pair of Sennheisers and they’re ok, but too big. This is my 4th pair of noise cancelling and by far the best. Previously, I’ve owned Koss, Sennheisers, Logitech and more recently Audio Technica, ranging in price from 35-$100 and by far these are superior in every aspect. These are also the first in ear I’ve owned.

The only downside is the bass is a bit disappointing. I’m curious to see how these match up to the dual driver phones Apple recently released. Give them a 4.5/5 for sound quality, 4.75/5 for sound isolation, 5/5 for value!

This headphone has the best overall sound quality and is aimed at the high end audiophile. The noise cancellation is better then most of the competition, eliminating 85% of the background noise.

This headphone is designed for the airplane traveller and folds compactly flat when not in use. I also like the extra long cable, and the volume control, both features missing on competitive headphones.

More Info on This Headphone.

This headphone takes standard AAA batteries, which is good, but it takes 2 batteries, which is not good.

This headphone is more expensive then several though, so you have to appreciate the sound quality to justify the investment.

The main negatives on this headphone are the high price and the need for 2 batteries.

Here is a condensed excerpt from one of the reviews on Amazon:

Almost perfect. I have been using noise canceling headphones since their commercial inception, mostly for air travel, and the Sennheiser PXC350 are the best sounding NC (noise canceling) headphones I personally have ever used. I have been carrying Bose NC over the ear headphones from product introduction, and prior to that Sony and others, logging many hours with different devices. Here’s the difference; the Bose have slightly more cancelation of airplane engine noise, but they cannot compare to the clarity of the Sennheiser. To put it another way, the PXC350′s have the flattest response, similar to my Etymotic canal phones, which I consider an excellent reference point. The difference was significant and noticeable to not only myself, but companion business travelers as well. One small issue…

Review of Beats Studio by Dre – Noise Cancelling Headphones

Beats Studio Dr Dre - Hi Def Noise Cancelling Headphones

I really like the sound quality in this headphone. The speakers are extra large, so the base is killer. The vocals are also crystal clear and I don’t hear any distortion at high frequencies. The noise cancellation technology and the isolation design are also very good, eliminating most (85%) of the background noise.

Another feature I really like in this headphone is the ability to take calls from my iPhone in the middle of listening to music.

More Info on The Beats Studio by Dr.Dre.

I’ve tested the noise cancellation and the sound quality is great  I love the ability to just listen to the music and fade everything else out.

The headphones fold up and are easy to travel with, and I think they did a great job on the styling.

This headphone takes standard AAA batteries, which is good, but it takes 2 batteries, which is not good. You actually can’t play the headphone without batteries, unlike some headphones where you can play the headphone without the noise cancellation and it works fine.

The Beats Studio by Dre is more expensive then several though, so you have to be into the bass to justify the price.

More Info on The Beats Studio by Dre.

The main negatives on this headphone are the high price and the need for 2 batteries. A small percentage of reviewers have also complained about poor construction but this is not a widespread complaint.

Here is a condensed excerpt from one of the reviews on Amazon:

A friend of mine had these headphones so I got to try them out before I decided to buy them. When he told me they cost $300 I laughed and thought why pay that much for headphones. After trying them however I understood why purchasing a high end headphone is worth it. The sound quality you get from these are easily 2 or 3 times better than anything I had heard before. From what I understand the fact that the headphone uses battery power gives it the power it needs to produce base and volume. 5.1 Surround sounds awesome. Music you have listened to for years sounds new and improved when you can really hear the full range of sound. I am very satisfied with this headphone and would suggest it to my friends. It is definitely worth the cost.

Review of the JVC HA NC250 Noise Cancelling Headphones

Overall Rating: 4.5/5.0

Price Range $98 – $120
JVC HANC250
This headset is one of the most popular headphones on the market today.   On Amazon, the JVC HANC250 has 264 reviews with an average star rating of 4 out of 5.

The noise cancellation technology just crushes it, eliminating 85% of the background noise.  That’s way better then the competition, even though this headphone is over the ear.  They also have some other patentable noise isolation stuff that cuts out noise even when the noise cancellation is off.

If you want to buy this headphone, order it from Amazon right here at the lowest price anywhere.

I’ve tested the noise cancellation and the sound quality is great  I love the ability to just listen to the music and fade everything else out.

I also don’t mind wearing these headphones for hours, as it is very comfortable to wear, and is very light at 5.3 ounces.  It also folds flat so it takes up very little room in my bag when I travel.

This headphone takes a standard AAA battery, not some proprietary thing and the battery has a 50 hour life rating.   While I don’t believe the 50 hours, I do believe the battery life is at least 25 hours and can easily be replaced with another standard AAA battery.

This headphone is also much cheaper then anything else with the same sound quality. From a price for value standpoint, you can’t beat the JVC HANC250.

If you want to buy this headphone, order it from Amazon right here at the lowest price anywhere.

The main negatives on this headphone are that the cable is short at 4′ and the battery is a bit hard to pop out and replace.  There is also no volume control on the headphone.

Here is a condensed excerpt from one of the reviews on Amazon:

I recently purchased the JVC HANC250 headphones after researching the options on the internet. The Bose were an obvious option, but the price could not be justified.

I have always been thinking about buying noise cancelling headphones, and with a pending trip to Australia (from New York) I decided that now was the time.

Pros:
Great sound quality
Excellent Noise Cancelling
Very comfortable
Long battery life (changed the battery 2X over a 48hr use period)
Nice looking
Excellent value

Cons:
Changing the battery under the ear cup is not the best design, but not that hard to do either.
